Weimar
After several seminars in Berlin on the history of Jews and anti-Semitism in Germany, Professor Wolfgang Wippermann accompanies the Lexia students on a weekend trip to Weimar. “Where there is much light, there are also great shadows,” goes a German saying; students of German history are prompted to consider the contrast of Weimar, the city of Goethe and Schiller, and the nearby former concentration camp of Buchenwald. Professor Wippermann begins with an afternoon tour of Buchenwald. Students have the opportunity to continue discussion in the evening. The next day we explore Weimar with a walking tour of Schiller’s House, the Bauhaus University and Museum, and Goethe’s Garden House. Students have the rest of the afternoon to tour Weimar’s other museums and sites, before we board the evening train to Berlin.
